The Portland Jr. Hawks Goalie Development Program (GDP) has four primary purposes:
Provide an educational, training, and support framework for PJH goaltenders to help them excel at this important, difficult position.
Ensure that proper attention is given to the development of age appropriate mental and physical skills required for goaltending success.
Provide education and resources to all Jr. Hawk coaches to enable them to get the best possible performance out of their goaltenders, while at the same time developing these goalies for higher levels of play.
Raise funds to offset the cost of goaltender development and equipment.
Goalie Program Details
The GDP is led by a Goalie Development Coordinator Tom O’Connor (tomo@canby.com, 503-263-6789).
The GDP will ensure that at least one quality goalie camp is held in the Portland area each year. A reputable goalie school may be invited to the area and/or the GDP may put on a camp if appropriate staff is available.
Coaching goalies – dedicated goalie coaches and mentors Lead goalie coaches will be identified and trained to instruct at PJH goalie camps and goalie-only training sessions. This cadre of goalie coaches will be a resource for team coaches to utilize when assistance is needed with their goaltenders or there are goalie coaching questions. Using the philosophy that teaching a skill helps one master it, older youth goaltenders will be encouraged and trained how to work with and mentor younger goalies when possible. It is important to remember that simply having played goal does not automatically make someone an effective goalie coach.
Coaching the coaches – “Every coach is a goalie coach” All Portland Jr. Hawk coaches should attend a session covering the basics of goaltender development. Coaches need to learn how to appropriately integrate goalies into drills, when they should separate out their goalies to work with an assistant coach, and how to handle things when their goaltender is struggling.
The GDP can help parents of new goaltenders know what they are getting into, providing guidance in regards to equipment, appropriate skill development by age level, and how to deal with the unique stress of being a goalie parent.
The GDP is recognized as a separate entity from all PJH teams, and will maintain separate finances as approved by the Board of Directors.
PJH Goalie Gear & Specialized Goalie Training Equipment PJH will ensure that an appropriate cache of PJH goalie gear is available for young goaltenders, will manage the check-out/check-in of the gear, and will make sure it is appropriately maintained.
