The mission of the Portland Jr. Hawks Youth Hockey Association is to provide rewarding recreational and competitive hockey programs for players ages four to eighteen. Our objective is to promote sportsmanship and respect, encourage discipline and committment, and inspire teamwork and positive attitudes in a safe, respectful environment while developing the fundamental and athletic ability of our players.
Portland Hockey History
Youth Hockey in the Portland area is not new by any means. It dates back to 1912. Bearing several different names over the years, from The Portland Rosebuds to The Portland Jr. Hawks, organized hockey has always reflected the area's love of the sport. In 1988, The Portland Jr. Hawks Hockey Association set it's primary goal to provide a quality ice hockey experience for youth ages 6-18. Excellence in coaching is one of the ways we have achieved this. This goal remains today as the fundamental core of The Portland Jr. Hawks.
But perhaps the best way to assess amateur hockey in Portland is by some of its past members. Mark Messier, Derek Gustafson, Ian Kid and Corey Millin have all played amateur hockey in Portland, as has Paul Gaustad, the Buffalo Sabres current draft choice. The hockey experience they received while playing with the Jr. Hawks was valuable and one that continues today for all the future alumni who enjoy the sport.
The Association has multiple levels of competitive skating for all age groups Skaters are separated by both age and skill levels. The Portland Jr. Hawks offer competitive hockey at both the "house" (recreational) and "Tiered" (accelerated) levels. This lets the skaters and parents choose what is right for them.
In 2013, the Portland Jr. Hawks have begun to establish their partnership with the Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA)
. This affiliation and strengthened partnership with the WHL Portland Winterhawks
will help our organization to grow and improve the future of both recreational and elite youth hockey players in the Portland area.
